Appearance

Grapes are smooth-skinned, juicy berries that can be light green, deep red, or purplish black. They are globular in shape, with many tiny seeds inside. Many varieties of grapes develop a whitish powdery coating, or bloom.

Taste

Grapes are a good source of sugar, with the amount of glucose and fructose varying by variety. Grapes with more glucose are easier to ferment.

Nutrition

Grapes contain minerals like calcium and phosphorus, as well as vitamin A. They are also a natural source of melatonin, a hormone that may help improve sleep. The presence of vitamin K, known as the coagulation vitamin, stands out in grapes, because without it the blood would not clot.

Health Benefits

Grapes contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that may help protect against cancer. The phytochemical resveratrol in grapes may help lower blood sugar levels and increase insulin sensitivity. Grapes are also a good source of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamin K, which can help strengthen bones in older adults. A serving of grapes about the size of a cup (151 g) contains 18% of your daily vitamin K needs.
