Turmeric

Turmeric

Appearance

Turmeric is the rhizome, or root stem, of a tropical blade-leafed plant. Fresh turmeric rhizomes are bright orange and similar in appearance to ginger, a close relative. The rhizome is divided into two parts: the mother rhizome, which is pear-shaped, and the fingers, which have axillary branches on either side.

Flavor

Fresh turmeric rhizomes have a livelier flavor than dried turmeric and have an earthy, peppery, and slightly bitter taste.

Composition

Turmeric contains curcumin, a chemical that gives turmeric its yellow color. Curcuminoids, which include curcumin and closely related substances, are responsible for turmeric’s activities. It is low in calories, low in fat and composed of carbohydrates.

Uses

Turmeric root is used in cooking, traditional medicine, cosmetics, and fabric dying. It is a common spice and a major ingredient in curry powder. Turmeric is also promoted as a dietary supplement for a variety of conditions. It has antioxidant properties. Curcumin is capable of relieving inflammatory problems and is due to the ability to inhibit the synthesis of inflammatory prostaglandins.
